Stop if operation is abnormal
Unusual heat, vibration, noise, or unreliable bur retention calls for taking the handpiece out of use. Follow your model’s instructions and arrange an assessment. The NSK FX contra-angle manual (PDF) explains these pre-use checks and warning signs.
1. Identify the motor and attachment
Many low-speed setups combine a motor with a separate straight nose cone, contra-angle, or other attachment. Write down the brand and model of each part. Also note whether your motor is air-driven or electric; the checks for one system may not apply to the other.
Photograph the model markings before completing a repair request. “Low speed not working” tells us less than identifying the motor, attachment, and the symptom you noticed together.
2. Check the setup against its manual
With rotation fully stopped, follow the manufacturer’s procedure to check the connection. Review the operating controls, too. For example, the NSK FX205 air-motor manual (PDF) describes a middle position between forward and reverse that stops the drive air.
For air-driven models, use the specified supply-pressure check and limit. Do not increase pressure simply to compensate for weak performance. For electric systems, consult the motor and controller instructions, and record any displayed error code. Limit office troubleshooting to procedures the manufacturer authorizes.
3. Describe what happens
A useful repair report separates what you observed from what you think failed. You do not need to name an internal part.
- It will not start: note the selected setting and whether you noticed an air leak, controller message, or intermittent response.
- It runs but loses power: say whether the problem appeared at startup or during use, and identify the attachment fitted at the time.
- It grinds, vibrates, or gets hot: record where you noticed the change, then leave it out of service. Noise alone does not identify a specific failed bearing or gear.
- The bur slips, wobbles, or will not release: record the bur type. Use only the model’s approved release method; if it will not release normally, ask for service help.
The FX contra-angle instructions describe how an unsuitable or damaged bur, incomplete insertion, or contamination in the chuck can affect retention. A retention problem needs an assessment, rather than a diagnosis based on one symptom.
4. Avoid treating one check as a diagnosis
If your manufacturer provides a procedure for checking the motor separately or comparing compatible attachments, follow that exact procedure. A motor turning without the attachment only tells you what happened in that condition; it does not establish that the motor performs correctly under load.
Tell us which combination showed the problem and which checks you have already completed. Do not keep running a noisy or overheating assembly to narrow it down. If you are unsure whether the motor, attachment, or both should be sent, contact us with the model details before packing.
5. Include these details with your repair
- The practice name, contact person, phone number, and email address.
- Motor and attachment brands, models, and any identifying serial numbers.
- The symptoms, when they began, and whether the issue is intermittent.
- The checks already performed, plus any recent repair reference.
- Your approval preference and any spending limit.

Common low-speed repair questions
Should I try more oil first?
Check the exact model’s care instructions before changing its lubrication routine. Required products and methods vary. Extra oil is not a diagnosis or a reason to return a malfunctioning handpiece to use.
Where can I find repair pricing?
See our estimated low-speed repair pricing. Identify both components on your work order and request an estimate if you are unsure which service applies. Final costs depend on the assessment and work needed.
