HANDPIECE REPAIR DECISIONS

Should I repair my handpiece or buy a new one?

Compare the complete repair estimate with the cost of a suitable replacement. A refurbished handpiece from Midsouth is another option to consider alongside repairing your current instrument or buying new.

Get a diagnosis and a complete quote first

A noisy, weak, or unreliable handpiece does not automatically need replacing. Ask what failed, what the repair includes, and whether other condition issues affect the decision. Compare actual options for your model and office.

Compare three practical options

Repair, refurbished, or new?
OptionWhat to compare
Repair your current handpieceThe diagnosed problem, work included, condition of the remaining components, total estimate, warranty, and expected return date.
Buy a refurbished handpieceThe individual unit’s condition and disclosed limitations, compatibility, current price, availability, and sales warranty.
Buy a new handpieceThe model’s suitability, complete purchase cost, required connections or accessories, warranty, and delivery schedule.

Compare the same intended job across all three. A price for an attachment alone is not equivalent to a package that includes a motor or coupling. Confirm exactly what comes with each option.

When repairing the current handpiece makes sense

Repair is worth considering when the proposed work addresses the fault, the remaining components are serviceable, and the complete estimate fits your budget. Keeping a familiar model may also be useful when your team already has compatible connections and care equipment.

Review its repair history without relying on age alone. If the same symptom has returned, ask whether it is related to the earlier work or a different problem. Include the previous invoice or work-order number so the history can be reviewed.

Use our repair pricing and warranty guide to plan, then confirm the estimate for the individual handpiece. A fixed percentage of a replacement price cannot tell you whether the proposed repair is appropriate.

Also clarify what “replacement” means in the quote. A replacement turbine goes inside your existing air-driven high-speed handpiece. It is different from purchasing a whole new handpiece.

Consider a refurbished handpiece from Midsouth

Midsouth sells refurbished handpieces alongside new models. A refurbished unit is worth comparing when you want another handpiece for daily use or a backup for the office. Review the specific listing and ask us to help confirm that it fits your setup.

All Midsouth handpiece sales include a six-month warranty. Ask about the coverage for the unit you are considering. This is the sales warranty; repair coverage is described separately on our repair pricing page.

Our catalog lists reference prices. Contact us to confirm current pricing, condition, and availability before ordering. Photos illustrate the model and condition; the individual item may differ, and price ranges can reflect cosmetic condition options.

Read the individual condition notes, including any disclosed limitations. Confirm the connection or coupler, bur compatibility, lighting features, and included accessories rather than assuming every listing has the same configuration.

When a new handpiece may be the better fit

A new model is worth considering if you need features your current handpiece does not provide, an appropriate repair is unavailable, or the replacement package better meets your office’s needs. Compare compatibility and care requirements before changing models.

Ask whether the quoted price includes everything needed to put the instrument into your existing system. An additional coupling or accessory can change the overall comparison.

Five questions before you decide

  1. What am I paying for? Get the repair scope or the replacement unit’s exact model, condition, and included items.
  2. What is the complete cost? Ask about shipping, additional work, and accessories.
  3. Will it fit our setup? Confirm the connection, intended use, and care requirements.
  4. When can we use it? Compare the estimated repair schedule with confirmed replacement availability and delivery.
  5. What warranty applies? Keep the quote and ask how to raise a concern after repair or purchase.

Common questions

Can I review a repair estimate before deciding to replace it?

Yes. Choose Send an estimate first on your work order. You can review the proposed repair before deciding whether to approve it or ask about a replacement.

Can I set a repair spending limit?

Select Repair up to my limit and specify a limit per handpiece or for the total box. Include the email address we should use if approval is needed.

How do I check a refurbished handpiece’s availability?

Find the model in the sales catalog, then contact us about that listing. We can confirm the current unit, condition, price, and availability before you order.
